Although the souvenir spoon craze didn't officially get started until the early 1890s (Salem witch spoons, Galt Washington spoons, etc.), one can find interesting souvenirs that predate this era. Pictured below are two examples. The first is a c. 1873 salt spoon in Gorham's Grecian pattern. The back is inscribed: Henry Wilson, Vice President, U. S., 1873. Presumably this commemorated his appearance in office, but perhaps it was a campaign promotional piece.
The second is an 1870s fork. The handle features an engraved landscape showing mountains, trees, a path, and a body of water. It was retailed by Henrichsen & Greenberg of Portland, Oregon. So perhaps this represents a popular sight in that state.

Those are very nice! I've not seen any that early before. I'll certainly have to keep my eyes out from now on. Here is one that is not as old, but this Schiebler P.T. Barnum spoon has a March 8, 1891 patent date. I know this does not mean it was made on that date, but it is an early one. Does anyone know anything about the retailer, Parker and Davis?
