Pictured below is a Durgin Chatham pattern serving spoon (app. 7 1/2") I've had for awhile. The top of the handle has a very 3 dimensional applied grape & leaf design. However, I have always wondered if the decoration is not original to the spoon. I have never seen a piece of this pattern (or any Durgin pattern this late) with any kind of applied decoration. This pattern also makes a nice choice for one wanting to apply decoration--its plain, tapering front is especially well-suited for this triangular grape design. On the other hand, the quality of the application is high. For instance, there is virtually no soldering apparent. Additionally, the silver under the grapes is visible and I can't seem to see any scratches or patina at all, while the rest of the spoon has fine overall usage marks typical of silver this age, as though the spoon has always had the grapes (or the grapes were applied by somebody who bought the spoon new). The leaves are cast. Perhaps others have seen different pieces of "Chatham Applied" or another Durgin object with identical leaves to confirm that the decoration was done by the factory. Until then, though, I will assume that the decoration is not factory-original. The pictures include the entire spoon, as well as a few close-ups; if additional images might be helpful, I can certainly take more and post them.

My vote is that it is an applied ornament not original to the spoon when it was made... Perhaps altered for a wine enthusiast. The leaves show hand chasing of the details and the grapes appear to be silver balls soldered together to form the cluster. I think it is nicely done and a good example of someones creative craftsmanship. Thanks for the image. IP: Logged |

Hi Paul, Great item! I may have been a custom job, but I would tend to think that it is a factory product. Durgin did produce Chatham with applied initials; I have seen a lovely set of Chatham Hammered with applied A&C style initials. We also know that Durgin was capable of producing an amazing variety of items, which we are still discovering. I don't see why they might not have made your item as is. Brent IP: Logged |
