Hi can anyone shed some light on the maker and age of this crumber. It is completely unmarked. The dealer I bought it from said it was most probably made by Wendt and I'm assuming it's coin. The mask detail is held onto the body by a screw type knob and there is a figural bird at the terminal end of the handle. The body of the handle is wood, i guess ebony. It measures 13 in long and had a gold wash on it at one time but that is mostly gone. Any further ideas or information on where I can go to research it would be greatly appreciated.

Neat piece. Looks about late 1860s/early 1870s. I wonder if it's by George Sharp or perhaps Whiting. That decorative disc right below the ebony handle looks like typical Sharp, and it was also used by Whiting someimtes. Also, I've seen some Whiting servers that used an identical or very similar bird. [This message has been edited by Paul Lemieux (edited 11-24-2002).] IP: Logged |
