[26-0428] I came across an article on an exquisite Tiffany silver trophy that was purchased by the Chrysler Museum, Norfolk and is currently on display. Here's the article with some nice images: Tiffany Yachting Trophy

Interestingly enough, this trophy commissioned by Ogden Goelet and James Gordon Bennett ties in with another important Tiffany patron, John W. Mackay. Mackay became enormously rich exploiting the Comstock Lode, and commissioned a magnificent Tiffany service for his wife in 1876. After the silver ran dry, Mackay moved to Paris in 1881 where he met James Gordon Bennett. Two years later, they set up the transatlantic Commercial Cable Company. Some of Bennett's ecentic habits can be read here: A 12-gallon silver cup? Gordon Bennett!
In 1877, while serving of Mayor of Liverpool, Walker gave the Walker Art Gallery to the city. It is now one of the most important collections of Victorian painting in Britain. Bennet also donated three cups to the New York Yacht Club in 1872. These will be presented as one of the prizes for the Rolex Transatlantic Challenge 2005 due to start on the 21st May. There are photos "Trophies to Spoil the Victor" quote: Bennett also commissioned this 1875 Schooner trophy which was either one of both of a pair of candelabra designed by Saint-Gaudens with Native American figures and themes from George Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio. The commission came through Tiffany designer Edward C. Moore; Moore's brother, Thomas, was Saint-Gaudens' friend from student days at Cooper Union. The candelabra were sold at auction in 1886 for the sum of $3,500. They have not been seen since! So, if you have them tucked away let me know... In addition to yachting, Gordon Bennett also created awarded for motor-racing (1900 to 1905)and hot-air ballooning (1906 onwards). Were the other trophies also by Tiffany? And do they still exist? As a footnote, the SS Mackay-Bennett, one of the company's cable-laying ships, was sent out to recover the dead after the sinking of the Titanic. IP: Logged |
