Hi Gang,

I have to admit that I am not very knowledgeable about Silver Hallmarks, however I have researched them some online. I have a piece that has the Lion (I assume Passant Lion from looking at other posts) however online every one I see is facing/walking to the left, however on my piece it is facing/walking to the right. Has anyone ever seen this and does this have a special meaning?

I appreciate your help and look forward to your reply.

There should be other marks in addition to the lion, what are they?

In addition to a note of any other marks , a picture of the lion would be essential for diagosis. The Netherlands ( and others) also used a lion and it can cause confusion.

Also is the head of the lion facing the viewer (Lion Passant Guardant) or facing to the right (normally facing to the left). In the former case BOTH eyes will be visible

However if the piece is English I can see two explanations
#1# Newcastle used the lion facing to right in the 1720's see Jackson(Pickford Ed) pages 486 and 494. Reason - they were weird !
#2# numerous lions passant were faked by English silversmiths in the 18th century (some being transported for the offence) and several continental makers also faked lions passant in the early 19th century.
As a faker if you make a copy of a mark it is very easy to forget that the punch must be mirror reversed - engravers also make similar mistakes.

If it turns out to be Newcastle - a very rare piece !

Hi Gang,

Thanks for your help. I actually was able to find a lot of matches to the piece while searching through ebay and the web. The piece turned out to be old mark of Gorham Chantilly pattern.

Thanks for your help.
