Had a nice hunting day today and found 8 small shells (salt dishes?) marked sterling and had the number 4 on the base as well. The large shell (master salt?) had these marks on it a lily a crown and a standing lion (facing left)under each of these there is a square with other figures that I cannot make out. Think the center one is a star. The ones on either side look alike. Under this are the intials GBW&S (or so I think) under this is a 3. The shell rests on 3 snail like feet. On the top there is an engraved unicorn. Any ideas or direction I can go to look? I have no research books (yet) and the local library will not let the research books out of the library. Any help would be appreciated. Also got a lovely Georg Jensen dish at the same place, so am wondering if the time period for both are the same? IP: Logged |

Just doing a little research and according to one source a standing lion is the mark for Glasgow,Scotland and a crown for Sheffield England. I think what I thought was a lily is a fer de lance (spelling is wrong to be sure) the 2 crowns look similair but not quite the same as do the lions. IP: Logged |

just curious what those symbols could mean now that it is a known American company and not English or Scottish. IP: Logged |

Nothing at all past an illusory reference to British silver work. The firm also used a W in a star suspended in a spider's web -- goodness only know what that was supposed to denote. IP: Logged |

By the way, a lily is a fleur-de-lys, fer-de-lance is a poisonous snake. IP: Logged |

Think it's supposed to be a Prince-of-Wales plume on the Webster mark. Cheryl ;o) IP: Logged |
