I have a tea strainer with "Sterling" and "7" on the back. There are no hallmarks. Can you give me any idea on how to find out the age or manufacturer of this item.

This is a form of strainer originally made in the 18th and early 19th Centuries. How large is it, and what is the nature of the Sterling mark - are there bare letters cut into the metal or are the letters raised and enclosed in a sunken rectangle? If the former, the number is probably a pattern number and the piece would be a reproduction made in the 20th Century; if the latter, it could be an early piece made in one of the few places where such a mark was used, and we would have to see a picture of the marks before any further guesses could be made. Hi there, How long is the strainer. I have a few sterling double handled (early to mid 20th c) that are about 5" to 6" long that are tea strainers and 2 that are 11" long The "sterling" mark puts it in the USA after about 1875 or so, and the # '7' is probably a pattern #. Looking foward to your answer. Respectfully, Marc IP: Logged |

I am still trying to master the art of "Photobucket." How scary is that!!! I will send a close up of the markings just as soon as I figure it out. The markings are cut into the metal. It is about 6.5 inches long. Thanks again for all your help. Leila IP: Logged |
