Let's have some fun. I would like to request that the more active regular posters to the Silver Salon Forums hold off from responding to this post for at least a week. Why am I doing this? You see the forums average 1500 to 2000 hits every day which means that most of the forum participants are observers. We would like to invite more observers to actively post. For those of you who are learning about researching silver marks here is something that is not too difficult to research. We think you will find this fun and interesting. Please share with us what you learn. These marks were found on a cocktail fork provided by Harold. Thanks Harold.

The "tree" mark is for Tuttle Silversmiths. The cresent mark with "DE" is the date mark. "DE" stands for Dwight Eisenhower who was president when the fork was made. The "I" means during his first term. OK! I was first to answer and I am sure I am correct -- so do I get a prize??? IP: Logged |

Now that the ice has been broken, I have a question. Does the Roman numeral series start with the remainder of a term for a vice president who takes over after the death of the president, or does it begin with the subsequent first term for an elected president? "My" pattern is Colonial Fiddle by Tuttle, and the term code doesn't appear to be consistent. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I thought I'd revive this post because I have a question about the use of the Presidential markings. I recently found a Tuttle bowl that only has the tree marking, so I was wondering whether the tree mark alone was used first, later or at the same time as the Presidential markings? IP: Logged |

Calvin Coolidge began to serve as president in 1924 which is the year Rainwater gives for Tuttle beginning to use the president's terms of office with a crescent, and the original pieces were marked with the crest of reigning English monarch. Hmm, well my piece has neither; it only has the pine tree shillling mark and then is marked sterling. The bowl is of the Dublin pattern; I have seen photos of some examples where the pattern name is also stamped on the underside, but that has not happened either. IP: Logged |

There's your answer. No president's mark means prior to 1924. IP: Logged |

Rainwater is wrong regarding the meaning of the Roman numerals under the crescent bearing the President's initials. The numerals represent the year in office, not the term. For example, I recently handled a piece of Tuttle silver with a crescent marked CC under which was a V. As far as I know Silent Cal was popular, but five terms? IP: Logged |

Okay, I have another question...Truth or urban legend? For recently made pieces of Tuttle, I read somewhere that when a piece does not have a presidential stamp, it was produced during the time Bill Clinton was facing impeacment charges. It was said that Tuttle did not want to continue the WJC on the flatware pieces and have them have the same stigma as RMN (Nixon). I'd be interested with you to learn whether this is an urban legend. My assumption is that it is. If the Tuttle honchos actually thought there was any real chance of Clinton being convicted in the Senate or resigning, then they were in a tiny minority among observers. IP: Logged |

Here is a three handled bowl by Tuttle with a Franklin Roosevelt mark and the Roman numeral IX. IP: Logged |
