Hello - Am confused...have a 3 pc vanity set stamped sterling with hallmarks ever so miniscule and faint so am not able to photograph....have done some research and am confused as to whether the mark is Watson or Wallace...the 3 characters themselves are found within a horizontal escutcheon: crown - "W" - lion passant.... the figures look more like the Watson & Briggs Co hallmark found on pg 391 ASM Kovels Book altho letter is a "W"....on foll pg 392 - shows the Crown, W, lion but these are found each individually within their own circle and the "W" is of a sharper definition...and yet on pg 194 of Dolans Am Sterling Silver FWare ID book under Wallace - the mark "used since 1910" again closely resembles it altho not shown within a escutcheon.... any help and clarification would be most greatly appreciated!! Thank you, rose IP: Logged |

Hello Rose, You have been quiet, does this mean that you have been out finding all kinds of interesting silver which we will be hearing about? I am sorry you couldn't get a good photo, photos always help. It sounds like the mark is one of the post 1910 Watson Silver Co. marks. Maryanne Dolan, in her text, does mention that Wallace purchased Watson in 1955 (it is easy to miss). When the marks can't be photographed a photo of the object and its design elements will help in the identification process. Plus it is always fun for us to see your latest acquisition. IP: Logged |

Hello Scott and Thank You!! for your gracious reply...well I had the darndest time trying to photograph the pieces much more difficult than anticipated ....I have linked 4 here for viewing - hope this many is OK to post here - the design is different of front and backsides so included one of each plus a close up of handle shape and one of top shape ... I was not successful last time with UBB code so please bear with me...hope this works...my feel for the set is that it was manufactured in the early 1900's but am confused as to how to make that determination from what I have read. I did see that Wallace purchased Watson in 1955 but wouldn't the mark reflect a more contemporary style. Thank You very much for your help and input - it is greatly appreciated!! IP: Logged |
