My neighbor is selling some of his possessions and is selling a silver bowl I am interested in. I have been unable to find out anything about the silversmiths. The bowl is appropriately marked with .925 sterling. The Gowell & Hubbard Company is printed in a rectangular box. The bowl is approximately 14" in diameter and 11" tall. The rim of the bowl is ornately decorated with flowers, leaves [I think] and scrolls. The bowl sits on an attached, squat pedestal. The only other marks are the #1336 and 14. In a sort of diamond-shaped box are the numbers 1886 [I believe]. I cannot identify the maker with my small local library or any books I have. This is the first time I have used this site as a registered guest and hope that I have posted this topic in the correct forum. I'm so glad to have found you. Can anyone help? Thanks so much. Could the "Gowell" be "Cowell"? The Cowell and Hubbard Co. was a retailer in Cleveland, Ohio for many years. They were a very prominent firm, on a par with Tiffany and others. Many items they sold were marked with their name. They were in business in the 1870s and continued at least through the 1970s. Not sure if they are still in business. IP: Logged |

Regarding the "1886": This could be part of the maker's mark for Dominick & Haff of New York -- rectangle with 925, circle, diamond with NNNN. Cowell and Hubbard sold their wares. Dominick & Haff was in business 1872-1928 when it was purchased by Reed & Barton. Dolan, in "American Sterling Silver Flatware" states that "the numbers in the diamond [NNNN] indicate the year the piece was made." Example: 8 < the 8 here is part of the 18 [This message has been edited by smfc75 (edited 05-18-2002).] IP: Logged |
