Hello everyone - In poking through my father's silver drawer I have found several wonderful items, including this serving piece: I think it's an asparagus server - is that right? And I'm pretty certain that it's from the Arthur Stone workshop, but I'm curious as to who B is and as to when the piece might have been made. Any ideas? TIA! IP: Logged |

Thanks, Scott, for reminding me that I should have used the search first ... After your suggestion I did, and although I didn't find the answers to all my questions I did learn from several posts about what sounds like a great book about Stone, which I'll try to find. hello, the fork isn't in front of me (it's at my father's house), but my recollection is that it's about 8" or 9" long. Next time I'm there I'll verify that. IP: Logged |

That piece is very nice. I collect pieces from the Stone shop. The quality is always top of the line. I would imagine that particular piece is scarce and quite valuable. I have the book by Chickering and would highly recommend it. It can be found online in new condition. I got mine from Spencermarks.com in the books section. I hope you can get a copy. asheland IP: Logged |

By the way, that is Charles Brown's mark, a very fine spoonmaker. They used that mark up until 1937, but it could be alot earlier, not exactly sure on that. IP: Logged |

Because of your recommendations, I have acquired the Chickering book (Arthur J. Stone: Designer and Silversmith); I'm very glad to have it! It's a great source of information, as well as a collection of photographs showing lovely Stone pieces. Thanks for suggesting it - and thanks, asheland, for the B attribution. BTW, the asparagus server is 9 1/2" long, and the "working end" is 2" wide. [This message has been edited by witzhall (edited 05-02-2006).] IP: Logged |

I really, really like the design of your server. I wish designs that nice were available in more widely produced flatware sets. Or maybe not as I would then be unable to rest until I had bought one. IP: Logged |

Thank you both, outwest and Kimo, for your appreciative comments. Would that it were mine - but I do get to enjoy it, as it's my father's! I agree with you that it is a) pretty big and b) an unusually lovely design. I'm getting more and more interested in Stone pieces, thanks to this. There is something that I connect with - probably that his work is handmade and so derivative of early, classical designs. Wonderful! IP: Logged |
