Here's one of four large, heavy (over 2oz.) aesthetic place spoons that I recently bought at auction for little money because (presumably) the mark had people mystified. Anyone know what accomplished 19th century maker?

Of course, now I see it. Until I took the close up picture and posted it I've been looking at the mark rotated 90 degrees, as if it were a bucking mule! Thanks, Scott... IP: Logged |

With the clue in hand that it's not a bucking mule, the pattern itself can be researched as Webster, no doubt named after Joseph Knowles' original partner, Henry Webster (1808 - 1864), who was also the original founding partner, with Jabez Gorham, of the Gorham Company (first called Gorham & Webster). Nice history lesson to tie up the loose ends... mdH IP: Logged |

Fascinating! The patent drawing is of this pattern. My hat is off... mdH IP: Logged |
