Maybe somebody can help with this question. Here is a bonbon spoon, marked only "Sterling" - could this be a Shiebler piece, I know that Whiting pieces often are marked only with "Sterling", does the same go for Shiebler? If not Shiebler, would you have any other suggestions re maker.

For any help I am really grateful.

Over the years we have seen more that a dozen pieces of this type. All of those marked Shiebler have had one or more common elements that we now recognize before we look for a mark.

This piece has none of those elements, so we would conclude that this is another beautiful piece by the reclusive "Mr. Sterling".

I am about 100% sure this is by French & Franklin of No. Attleboro, MA. Their mark is an "F" in a circle, but some of their pieces are unsigned. Nearly every piece of theirs I have seen has had this idiosyncratic style of handle involving twisted wire, applied elements, and enamel in sky and navy blue. And I have not seen this style of work by any other maker. So I am sure your bonbon is by French & Franklin. They seemed especially prolific in bonbon spoons. I have ones with interesting pierced bowls like yours, and one with a Palmer Cox Brownie handle.

Paul, thanks so much - Rainwater/Redfield gives a date of 1896, so end of 19th century is proably OK for dating. Will look carefully if I find a F in a circle anywhere on the piece.
Again many thanks, regards, Dorothea

Dorothy, I don't believe that anyone answered your question as to whether Shiebler made unmarked pieces. Short answer - yes.
Here is a 12 1/2" paper knife marked
    Howard & Co
    New York
    STERLING
    2105

The last picture is from the July-August 1989 issue of Silver Magazine of a Shiebler belt buckle with chatelaine hook. It has the same motif and workmanship as the paper knife.

I had a Shiebler desk ruler with a cherub design that was unmarked (definitely Shiebler because I had another similar ruler that was marked). My unmarked ruler was also retailed by Howard & Co. I think Howard & Co. must have sometimes asked the makers they sourced not to sign their wares, as I have had several attributable silver pieces that bore no maker's mark, only the Howard & Co. mark.
