Recently, at a second-hand store, I found a small sterling cup, dented and tarnished. It has nice proportions with a rolled rim. It was obviously spun rather than raised. The stamp is "sterling by Grand" set one word above another with sterling at the top, all in a long oval. Sorry no pictures but I'm not good at that and I have enough grey hairs as it is. Anyone familiar with that mark? Rainwater doesn't have it. Thanks to all IP: Logged |

Hello middletom! This is what I have found doing a search. Grand Sterling Co. in New York is an importer of sterling silver since 1963. They are a wholesalers and retailers of sterling silver, mostly of Judaica. Hope this helps. Enjoy the day! Jersey IP: Logged |

Jersey, Thank you for that information. This cup doesn't appear to me to be Judaica, though for all I know, it well could be. It is interesting in that the cup was originally without decoration, but someone who was an novice engraver started to decorate the cup with a design that appears to be three feathers attached to a band. That design was engraved three times on the cup and a fourth rendition was started, but not finished. Above and below that design are thin bands of zig-zag engraving which varied in their zigs and zags. The bottom band doesn't line up where the two ends meet. Or perhaps I should say they don't meet. Also, the "feathers" are just outlines done with the same zig-zag work as the bands. IP: Logged |

Hi again middletom! I can relate to your predicament re posting pictures, both you & I are handicapped in this matter. That said, in further searching I have also come up with sterling clarets marked sterling by grand 0.925, TOPAZIO, PORTUGAL. Could be another possibility. I must add that they are marked as such as well. Hope someone can help you with your treasure. Enjoy the day! Jersey [This message has been edited by jersey (edited 08-23-2007).] IP: Logged |

Jersey, Thanks again for your help. I suppose, since this cup was made off-shore, this thread shouldn't be under "American Sterling". My mother was from Hackensack and she was a great silver enthuesiast and kindled my interest in silver. Are you from near there? Thanks again. Middletom IP: Logged |

Hello middletom! Glad I could help some what. Don't want to get away from the forum silver topics, but what a surprise to hear about your ties to Jersey. My teen years I spent in Hackensack, & I am there just about everyday. Where did your Mom live? I have collector friends there. Maybe you could email me & we could chat. Jersey IP: Logged |

Jersey, I'd be happy to email you. How do go about doing that? I don't imagine you want to put the address on this site. Maybe Scott can give you mine. IP: Logged |

Hi Middletom! That would be great, if it's OK with Scott. Thanks Jersey IP: Logged |
