Hello & Happy Holiday! I have 2 questions please. First question: Is regarding Tiffany's Cordis pattern. I have seen pieces marked Tiffany & co. sterling m, and Tiffany & co (what looks like STG m), are these correct marks? The other question refers to Mr. Hood's book on Tiffany Silver Flatware, pages 38 & 39, in which he has copied Tiffany's silver weights for various pattern & pieces. Although he has indicated other makers listed weights on their pieces & says that for whatever reason Tiffany did not. How then does one know in any of those patterns he list which weight you are getting.......unless you can weigh them yourself or ask the dealer, and the difference being, (other than melt value), is quality enhanced. I hope I am presenting this question correctly. As always, Thank you for your time. Enjoy the day! IP: Logged |

The answer to your first question is yes. I'm not sure what your second question is. [This message has been edited by Richard Kurtzman (edited 03-22-2008).] IP: Logged |

Hello again! Thank you Mr. Kurtzman & Marc for your answer re question one. I'm just wondering why they abbreviated the word sterling......? Re: My weights & measures, the reference suggests that some manufacturers used a marking system (Tiffany apparently never did), i.g. T=Trade. R=regular (medium), H=Heavy, to indicate the weight of pieces. How do we know what those weights were? Tiffany's to some degree could be figured out by using the charts. Hope you know what I'm trying to figure out. Could this also be a way to determine a "true" piece from a manufacturer. Thank you for your time. Happy Holiday! Jersey IP: Logged |

I believe in old Gorham catalogs, they describe what each weight designation means for a dozen teaspoons. It was something like 9oz per dozen "trade" weight teaspoons, 12oz per dozen "regular", etc. This information is probably also in Carpenter's "Gorham Silver" but my copy seems to have vanished. I'm not as familiar with weight marks of other manufacturers. IP: Logged |

Tiffany listed the different weights per dozen in some of their Blue Books. As far as I know the only way to know which weight that you have, light, medium or heavy, is to weigh your piece(s) and compare it to Tiffany's tables. IP: Logged |

Thank you so much Paul & Mr. Kurtzman for your responses. Now, that leads me (of course), to another question. Does anyone have a piece of flatware to show how they are so marked? Thank you again for your time. Jersey IP: Logged |

"H" weight designation as seen on a Gorham Versailles teaspoon.

Thanks Paul! I would have thought that the H referred to the designer or some such. Again I am indebted to you. Enjoy the Day! Jersey IP: Logged |
