Above are some camellias that my wife picked today. We are finally getting a good rain and she did not want them to take a soaking. They are in a bowl marked J S and Co, Sterling, Wedgwood, and Patented. The lid is perforated so that the stems of the flowers can pass through to reach the water in the bowl.

The lid is silver plated rather than sterling and it is marked that the base metal of the plated lid is brass. I have also seen this bowl and other pieces in this Wedgwood pattern with the International silver mark.

No real question – just thought you might like to see some petty flowers.
J. S. and Co. is the Joseph Seymour Company from Syracuse, New York.

The J.S. Co mark is actually one used by International. It sure looks like a J, but it must be intended to be an I. You see it on other International pattern flatware and holloware from this same time period. Wedgewood is only an International pattern.

Hope this helps, and nice flowers!

Brent,

Thanks for the information about the International Silver Co. I looked up the Joseph Seymour Co. in Rainwater and they were most likely out of business when this bowl was made.

Looks like we will be getting our first frost next week so lots of flower cutting tomorrow.

The sky is gray and my garden is covered in white, wet snow. As I think I am getting cabin fever already your camellias are a welcome treat.

Camellias and silver are a beautiful combination. As argentum says just the thing to lift us up on a dreary day.

The bowl with the perforated lid is what I've always heard called a rose bowl. I actually have one too, a more humble object, in what is surely silverplate, decorated with flowers and donkeys. Among the few words written in Cyrillic on the bottom is Mockba I think Moscow. It came from my husband's grandmother. When we first set up housekeeping, she sent us a care package with used but useful items. Over the years I've used the garlic press and the potato masher a lot more often than the rose bowl. This spring I'll get it out and polish it up. Thank you for the inspiration.

On a technical note, the pierced insert is commonly called a "frog". In American silver, the frog is usually brass, silver plated or otherwise. I'm not sure why this is. I have seen silverplated brass frogs on large and expensive sterling bowls, often with substantial wear-through that makes the whole piece less appealing.

Hello ahwt!

What a treat to see your lovely flowers in such a beautiful bowl.

I too have a rose bowl, quite simple with an etched design marked sterling silver by Woodside. It also has the frog which is not marked at all, so I assume it is plate. I keep mine year round filled with seasonal flowers. Now of course it has Poinsettias in it! It makes for a lovely holiday centerpiece for either the dinner, coffee table or mantle. I love it.

Enjoy yours, thank you for sharing it with us on an otherwise gloomy weather day.

Good wishes for the Holiday season.
