Hello all, Here is a set of six mystery items in the relatively scarce Reed & Barton sterling pattern LA ROCAILLE, introduced around 1890. I do not have them in hand, but as I recall they are about 5 1/2 inches long, with unusual asymmetrical bowls with a ruffled upper edge. Our best guess is ice cream spoon, or possibly the elusive "Sherbet Spoon" as listed in some old catalogs. The shape of the bowl is much like that on a full size ice cream server. On the other hand, they may be some kind of odd serving piece, though since they came in a set of six it is a little less likely. What do you think? These have stumped a number of experienced flatware specialists. Brent IP: Logged |

Hello Brent! They are beautifull! My friend calls hers Sorbet spoons, but because yours have the slice shape as well, perhaps it had a dual purpose, for ice cream too. Possibly because either could have been very hard to cut through back in the day therefore the slice part became necessay as well. Just a thought but have you tried contacting Reed & Barton directly? Happy New Year & Enjoy the day. Jersey IP: Logged |

This is where I love to fantasize about marketing angles--could they possibly have been "aspic spoons?" Now, I've eaten aspic with a fork, and it ain't easy. But these little slices seem just right for a cool tomato aspic. I've never seen such a thing, but I've never heard of an aspic spoon either. They could have been a boxed set marketed by a hopeful silver company trying out a new form... Love the pattern! IP: Logged |
