I just bought a child's mug marked "J.W.P. & S. 800" at auction. It hasn't arrived yet, so I've only seen the photos.

First of all, does anyone recognize that mark? I couldn't find it, but my library is pretty pathetic.

Also, I was puzzled by the 800. I assume that means 800/1000 parts silver, but the pattern--it has a band with cupids and an engraved cartouche--looks 1880s-1890s Beaux Arts/ Renaissance revival to me. Wouldn't that be later than coin silver? I supposed it could be plated, but it doesn't look it from the pictures.

Thanks!

Here are the photos:

The 800 mark is found in Northern Europe and was used well into the 20th century (if, indeed, it's not still used somewhere--I don't know). You've got the date on yours right--1880s-90s, I'd say.

No idea about the maker's marks, however.

Thanks, Ulysses! So it's not American, then? Darn, I posted in the wrong section.

Well, it could still be American - the 800 just might be a production number...

I am just going on instinct... it has the feel of Europe and is not a childs cup (I have been told that baby items were not commonly made over there).

It is a handsome object and there is no reason it can't be a childs cup over here!

I just assumed it was a child's cup because of the dings (which suggest a baby banging it on the table) and the monogram, but I guess that was silly--it isn't inscribed TO anyone, it just has a single person's initials.

I bought it as a rescue. It was priced at scrap and full of dings, so I thought someone else was sure to melt it down.

Well, maybe I'll know more when it arrives.
