Here attached are images of a teapot by Samuel Kirk, Baltimore, 1835-1843, and its marks. The research done for a show at the Maryland Historical Society in the mid-1980s, just when I bought it for Newark, suggests the date range. I acquired it specifically because (1) everyone thinks you have to have a piece of Kirk, and (2) it represents the beginning of repousse in a full-blown rococo mode in America. IP: Logged |

The mark on your teapot is shown in an article entitled "Marks on Baltimore Silver 1814-1860: An Exploration" by Patrick M. Duggan in the "Book Silver in Maryland". (see Figure 7, page 29) The author indicates that this mark was used between 1830-1843 while Samuel Steele was the assayer. IP: Logged |
