This cup, by Lawrence Crichton, was presented to my great-grandfather in 1925. Elihu Root was Andrew Carnegie's lawyer up until his death in 1919, and the cup was given by Carnegie's widow and children on Root's 80th birthday. Root lived until 1938. I inherited the cup (or, rather, rescued it from a box in the basement) as a teenager and have had it ever since. Lawrence A. Crichton was a prominent firm of London silversmiths, who had a branch store in NYC, catering to just such folks as Root and Carnegie. I've always thought I'd have my ashes soldered into this cup and donate them to the Newark Museum. IP: Logged |

In case you have an interest, Elihu's uncle, Philander Sheldon Root married, Elizabeth Middleton, the daughter of the silversmith Lynott Bloodgood. IP: Logged |

There's a great 1924 advertisement for Crichton's NY store in the Silver Ephemera forum... IP: Logged |
