Welcome to the forum! In addition to telling us something about your interest in silver and in this object in particular, please also post a photo or two of the object itself. I did get to see the photo before it was taken down, and it looked like a fairly standard small pierced dish by Gorham, probably dating to the mid-20th century. I've never been sure what these were for, and it's not clear whether this one was very small (3-4 inches - 10cm or thereabouts), or more like 6-7 inches (15-20cm or thereabouts) -- one sees them in both sizes. The somewhat larger one is often identified as a candy or nut dish, the smaller seems even less certain. It would be interesting to know how this piece of American commercial silver ended up in Belfast -- they may have had outlets there, but does this relate to a shortage of local silversmiths? A preference for an American rather than English product? A gift or souvenir, or someone who moved there? IP: Logged |
