Hi Everyone, I have a sugar shell in Whiting's Italian K pattern which according to my books was introduced in 1880. Yet, my sugar shell has the Whiting hallmark, sterling and Pat. 1874 on the reverse plus a letter "K" and "I". Is there any way to explain this date discrepancy? Could this piece be a fake? Yet, it seems an obscure pattern for someone to fake. Any thoughts much appreciated. Kelly

Happened to have my old JCK Index sitting next to me (too tired to trot in and check any others), it shows Italian and its engraved variations as circa 1880, which seems reasonably close to me - if your references are showing it as introduced in 1880, then it's just an error (most books have at least a few). The patent number is D7902, issued to Charles Osborne on Nov. 24, 1874, assigned to Whiting. ~Cheryl [This message has been edited by dragonflywink (edited 10-13-2011).] IP: Logged |

Thank you Cheryl and Scott!!! That explains it. It did not occur to me that the patent date could be earlier than the date of commercial introduction and production. Yet, again I have learned something on the Forums! Thanks again, Kelly IP: Logged |

Believe it's more likely that your references are in error, as said, the JCK Flatware Index shows Italian, -J, and -K as circa 1880; Turner shows the original pattern as circa 1875-80, -J & -K as circa 1880; Dolan shows all three as circa 1875 (reasonable, considering the mid-November, 1874 patent filing and issue dates). ~Cheryl [This message has been edited by dragonflywink (edited 10-13-2011).] IP: Logged |
