[26-1971] I have never had much interest in silver until lately. I spend a good deal of time checking out antique malls for unique items. That's how this tureen was found. I hope to learn the pattern name if there is one and if there is a specific use for it. The purpose for asking is to satisfy my own curiosity. I am trying to identify the Gorham pattern of this tureen. The only thing I know is that it was made in 1872. Thanks in advance.

Wonderful find. With the pierced plate that lifts out, it probably would be called a bacon or asparagus server. It appears to be in the style of the 1870's. Others here are more knowlegable than I on this. I don't recall having ever seen one like this in US silver. What are the dimensions? Thanks for sharing. IP: Logged |

A nifty piece of silver. Style would have been called neo-grec (New Greek) and it surely would have been meant to "seem" French in style to whoever bought it originally. There are no pattern names per se for silver that isn't flatware--this wasn't meant to match anything, although it is a design I haven't seen before. Remember that the engraving was custom--i.e. it was an option that Gorham could provide at extra cost--along with the great monogram. It looks pretty small--could it be a butter dish? (Although I don't think of them as oval--but what shape is butter supposed to be?). Seems too small and shaped wrong for asparagus or bacon. IP: Logged |
