Amateur here...

I have a spoon with Gorham marks - right facing lion, anchor and then the G and marked Sterling.

Inside the bowl of the spoon is a kind of tree of life, then in large, ornate, block-print letters, Oakland. Below the Oakland is a kind of fish or football sort of oval with AL in block print letters.

Any ideas of when this was made?
Was it a souvenir spoon from Oakland, Alabama?
Does AL mean American League (I don't think so! :-) ?

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you sure it isn't a large C with AL inside the bowl? Oakland CALifornia would seem a reasonable guess.

Thanks! You are right..it looks like an elongated C.

I'm wondering if you or anyone knows the time period during which this spoon was made given the hallmarks I described.

I do not own any silver books that I have seen mentioned herein, and don't plan to be a collector.

Thank you in advance for considering my question.

Gorham used slight variations on the same basic marks for over 100 years, so the marks won't tell us when the spoon was made. If you can describe the spoon pattern, though, we might be able to give you a ballpark dating.

Thank you.

The end of the spoon handle has two curly cues with a little tri raised crown type mark with one round dote underneath. Then about a half inch of no raised pattern and then what looks like a hanging lily of the valley or a leaf with an apple in front of it. Well, by this you should know that I know nothing of silver and patterns!

Ok, thanks again for your help.

Best regards,
G. Blake
