[01-1130] I would appreciate any help determining if my moat spoon is American or otherwise. It is marked 925 above 1000 and STERLING. no maker's marks that I can see. Thanks all. IP: Logged |

Welcome to the Forums! The mark you describe was used by Fessenden & Co. of Providence, RI, in business from about 1858 until 1922. They made a lot of lightweight sterling flatware. Your spoon is most likely a combination olive spoon/olive pick; I once had a Fessenden one probably a lot like yours. Real mote spoons were quite small, no longer than a teaspoon, and were used for fishing tea leaves out of teacups. The pointed end was used to poke the leaves out of the grill on the inside of the teapot. Mote spoons went out of fashion by the early 1800's. There is a thread (Southern Mote Spoons: Too Good to be True???) on fake mote spoons in the Coin Silver Forum, if you'd like to see some. All of the recent fake Southern mote spoons are much bigger than the real thing. I hope this answers your questions. Brent IP: Logged |
