[01-1470] Can anybody tell me what this is? It is marked sterling but no other hallmarks or names. The design is of an art nouveau lady with flowing hair. The top is shaped almost like a hollow handle knife and down at the bottom it almost looks like tweezers but can't be because there is not enough room to squeeze them closed!

Can you show a photo of the tip from the side, perhaps? A closer look at the functional end might be enlightening. IP: Logged |

Hello, Here is a side view of it. It isn't the best image but hope it will help.

Hi Karen. These originally had longer tweezers ends. They may have worn over time or broken. Your item dates to circa 1905. Luckily nice handles like this can still be used--a competent silversmith should be able to replace the old tweezers with something of a similar size, possibly from an item with a broken handle. Originally, your tweezers would have been about this length:

Hi there, Have seen that end many times before on mother-of-pearl pieces, holding a nail file in place. I don't believe I've ever seen a sterling nail file done that way though. Sure that I have a MOP one in the house somewhere, just can't seem to find it at the moment.

I can't imagine how anyone would use tweezers that short. In the photo it looks as if the tweezers may have been pushed up into the handle?? IP: Logged |
