Just a query for those who know silver history, but at ONC we were sent some pieces for engraving removal, two Steiff "Repousse" and one Schofield "Balto Rose". The designs are so much alike, I'm wondering if Baltimore had a particular liking for that type of decorative work on silver. Does anyone know if that's true, or just coincidence that they are so much alike? IP: Logged |

Geoff, Baltimore had several silversmiths who were rather skilled at the floral and figural repousse during the later part of the 19th and early 20th century. I have a pair of early sugar tongs with chased and repousse decoration by Kirk. I also own a wonderful brush handle hand repoussed by Jenkins and Jenkins also of Baltimore. Fred IP: Logged |
