Harris and Shafer

Could anyone please tell me about these silversmiths?

I have old serving spoons with these names. They are family pieces.

I'd like to know when and where they were made and anything about the company?

Thank you to anyone who can assist me.

I believe that Harris and Shafer was a retailer in Washington - they also sold clocks. Are there any other marks? Harris and Shaffer certainly sold silver pieces by Dominick and Haff.

Thank you for responding Patrick. There are other marks. They say "sterling", "pat 64" and then some hallmarks which are a lion, an anchor and what looks like a very fancy capital "C" or maybe a "G". Do you know what that might mean?

The lion, anchor and old English style letter G are the pseudo-hallmarks of the Gorham silver company which began in 1831. They have produced countless items over the years. Gorham is now owned by Lenox. You should go over to the Gorham section of this forum to read up on them.

Thanks, Kimo. I'll have a look at Gorham.
