Stieff used letters and symbols to date their holloware from 1901 to the late 1970s. The letter S is actually the date code for 1952. "Rose" pattern is from 1937, but "Rose Motif" is from 1953-1954 so your piece could very well be from the mid 1950s. IP: Logged |

Thank you for your reply. I hav'nt been able to find any web sites with pattern names and dates for Stieff, which would tell me if it's Rose or Rose motif. But if "Rose Motif" was'nt made until 1953, then my tray might be "Rose", since it was made in 1952. I would like to know what the name of the piece is. Again, thanks for the info. IP: Logged |

Except for very popular patterns, the flatware designs were usually just made in the patent year. Stieff's Rose, however, was just such a popular pattern. There are several good reference works for flatware, one of which is Warman's Sterling Flatware Identification Guide. Most of them lump Stieff with Kirk (Kirk/Stieff) with which it merged in 1979. Knowing the flatware pattern can sometimes be a clue to the name of the holloware pattern, but just as often the holloware is its own, unnamed pattern. IP: Logged |
