[01-2302] Hi there, I purchased this fine pair of spoons today at a local antique shop. On the reverse, they are marked "Sterling", "PAT AP 23 1901" and at the stem/bowl join, there is what looks like a side on lion holding a shield with a "W" on it and also another symbol above, which looks like a Gothic letter "O". I was wondering if anyone could tell me the maker and country of origin. The new Tardy's still is not published but the Book Dealer has reserved me a copy as soon as it comes out! IP: Logged |

I think your spoons are King Edward pattern by the Whiting Manufacturing Co. of New York IP: Logged |

What you have there is King Edward by Whiting (1901). The Whiting Mfg. Co. operated from 1866 until its purchase by Gorham in 1924, first in Attleboro, MA, then in New York, NY. Naturally, Tardy isn't going to help you at all with something like this. For American marks, I use Rainwater's Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers, and to identify the more common American patterns, I use Jeweler's Circular/Keystone. Tardy is good, for example, if I see a mark, and I know it's Continental or from some other country about whose silver and silver marks I know little, and I want an idea of what those marks mean. It will not identify makers, only country of origin, the fineness, and sometimes a rough idea of the date. IP: Logged |
