I recently saw a large reticulated tray by Peacock of Chicago. The silver work was quite nice and well detailed, with urns etc. I got the impression they were a retailer, but I wonder who made their silver?

The Chicago retailer C. D. Peacock sold silver made by many major and minor manufacturers.

Suppossedly at some point Peacock had its own silver works. The story is somewhat hazy. But there was work made either by Peacock employees, by people contracted to Peacock or to order for Peacock. From what I have seen, the silver looks suspiciously like Kalo. But not enough to clearly identify it as such. Some also resembles the Marshall Field work, but again not enough for attribution. To my mind the Chicago silver tends to become a very confusing tale as artisans and smiths floated from firm to firm with their own established styles. And frequently worked on their own. This area needs further study.

Perhaps ChicagoSilver, our expert on this region, can weigh in on the subject.
