I just got this piece and haven't seen anything quite like it! It was made in 1883 and has the cast sea creatures on it. It's a splendid piece!
Has anybody ever seen anything like this? Any insight on how it was made? Or if it's a custom piece? Any information is appreciated! IP: Logged |

That thing is fantastic! Lucky asheland!! Can you show us the back? I'm guessing the fish, waves, and seaweed are chased and engraved, the center is hammered, and the crabs were cast separately and soldered on. IP: Logged |

This is indeed a splendid piece. Please show the marks on the reverse. Do the marks by any chance include a letter E with a two digit number following it? What are the dimensions? IP: Logged |

Thank you for the compliments! The marks on the back read:
Does anybody have the Gorham archives that might shed some light on that model number? IP: Logged |

Beautiful piece! I recently viewed a YouTube video posted by author Phil Dreis, dated April 19, where he is showing a very similar tray that he describes as an unusual example of Martele'. It is a different shape. No mention is made of the backstamp or marks but it has an almost identical applied fish and crabs as your example. I did not want to provide the actual link since the videos are promoting his business and I do not want to violate any SSF guidlines. You might also check Pristo's book on Martele to see if this or a similar tray is described there. IP: Logged |
