Here's a soup ladle (needs a good polish), shown with a peach for scale. Anybody recognize this c. 1870s Renaissance revival pattern? It looks vaguely familiar to me, especially the winged lion-birdie-beastie, but it's not Durgin Renaissance or Whiting Arabesque. It's marked STERLING (badly struck) and otherwise unmarked, unless the sort of star-in-a-circle or sunburst thing near the STERLING mark is the maker's mark rather than part of the pattern. Anybody recognize that mark? Thanks, silver friends.

The pattern is Cleopatra, by San Francisco maker Schulz and Fischer. It is a mid 1870's pattern, although I can't think of the exact year. The circle mark looks strange however - it doesn't look worn, but it doesn't look like the California state seal either. I love it -not just the pattern but the bright cut bowl with that "rib" down the middle. I have a weakness for collecting soup ladles myself! IP: Logged |

Oooo, thank you, Lisa! You're right, you're right! How satisfying to have the answer. I think that wheel-shaped mark must just be part of the pattern, since there's a very similar fleurette back-to-back with it on the front of the ladle. Schultz & Fischer must not have put the California seal mark on it, for some reason. It IS an appealing ladle, isn't it? It was mislisted in an auction, so nobody else was bidding. I couldn't resist. It's cleaning up very nicely--in perfect condition, except for a little nick on the back of the handle where some dimwit sawed into it it to do an acid test. (Why? Why? Why?? It's marked STERLING, for pity's sake!) Light gilding inside the bowl. Looks like it was never used. I now officially have Way Too Many soup ladles. (Would love to see your soup ladle collection, Lisa!) IP: Logged |
