[01-2605] I found this while out Christmas shopping yesterday, and I couldn't resist it! As the detail photo of the handle shows, it has a really fun lizard and elaborate flowers. The blade, which you can see is not in great shape, has the marking J.M.Co. The handle also is marked STERLING twice where the blade inserts, but it has no other mark. However, the STERLING mark is done in stylized lettering, with the S almost looking like a serpent. Unfortunately, the marks are very small and worn so photos didn't work. Any help identifying would be appreciated. IP: Logged |

This is my very crude attempt to sketch the sterling mark-the S doesn't look quite so much like the number 5 as I have drawn it!

Hello Doc! I don't know if this helps but I think there was/is a company in Dublin Ireland around 1968 with that name. They did (celtic) snake motifs. Enjoy the day! IP: Logged |

I believe this is by one of the Meriden Brittania Company firms. It is both a novelty piece and a souvenir of Florida piece, an orange knife. There are also some alligator spoons that were marketed along with it. Sometimes the blade has Florida etc engraved on it. Usually it doesn't. Rainwater may have an example. The lack of a maker's mark frequently means it was made up for a wholesaler, who owned the rights to the pattern. IP: Logged |

I think the Dublin suggestion would be too late for this piece-I think it dates earlier than that. The Meriden Brittania/Florida connection makes sense. I thought it was too fun to pass up! IP: Logged |

This appears to be a variation of one of Greenleaf & Crosby's patterns (patent D22860), the 1893 design is extremely similar, but without the wonderful little gator. According to Rainwater, G & C had a die press at their Jacksonville facility to produce some of their wares, many of the pieces I've seen also bear trademarks from Durgin, Gorham, and Dominick & Haff. ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

J.M.Co also sounds like it could possibly be Joseph A Meyers Co, Los Angeles, CA. [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 12-07-2007).] IP: Logged |
