I am going to Texas in a few days (Austin, Houston, and Galveston). I hope anybody familiar with the areas can suggest good shopping. Basically I only know about the few shops on Westheimer in Houston. Would like to know of any recommendations for outdoor antique flea markets, antique shops, and high-end consignment stores in and around these cities, as well as possibilities on our drive from Houston to Austin. I would like to hear of places that have old jewelry, silver, and 80s-90s designer clothes. Thanks in advance for any help! IP: Logged |

Hi there Paul, With silver at 30 year highs, your best bets will be at coin shops. I have picked up great items in coin and sterling the past 4 months, as it seems that everybody is selling. Latest finds are an 18th c. USA coin ladle and several Chicago (Kalo) bowls, not to mention some nifty Bateman family flatware. Most of the antique shops that normally would have stocks of silver to sell, have been ravaged by scrap dealers to the point of being bare, but the coin shops still have quantities. Every small town between Houston, San Antonio, and Austin have cute little Antique shops, but when I went through there 2 months ago, there was no silver. Look up the coin shops in the Yellow pages for the cities you will go through, and you will be rewarded. Sorry, I cannot help you with late 20th c. clothing. Texas is not California. Happy hunting... Hi Paul: About halfway between Houston and Austin is a little town called Brenham; there are several antique and vintage shops there. I discovered it making the same drive you are, and was pleasantly surprised. In Galveston, there are a number of antique shops in the historic Strand district; I have to say I have not been to downtown since Hurricane Ike, so I don't know if that shut down any businesses. Have fun, y'all. IP: Logged |
