[26-1602] I am hoping that the attached photo is clear enough to make a guess on a maker.
I have several pieces in the same pattern that have this mark and I have attributed a maker based on what is shown in Hagan's Flatware guide. The problem is that the marks shown for that maker are not what is on my sterling. I am not naming the pattern now so that I don't influence any responses to my post. IP: Logged |

This looks like an old mark of the Simpson Hall & Miller firm; the knights helmet. Some of the later pieces have different IS marks. In my experience, it is a mark that frequently is blurred or poorly applied. IP: Logged |

Thanks Scott. My rule of thumb is that if the mark is sort of hard to read and verticle, its SH&M. Glad to be proved wrong. What is H H Curtis? IP: Logged |

H.H. Curtis & Co. of North Attleboro, Massachusetts (1890-1915) I used the 3rd edition of
Dorothy T. Rainwater Generally available for $11-14 There are also forth & Fifth editions available starting at $14-24. If you don't have this standard reference in your silver library make it your next purchase. IP: Logged |

Ok, I checked my Rainwater and am not sure about that being the right mark. I will check my pieces again and see if I can get a better close-up pic. The same mark appears on all the pieces I have of the Yetive pattern. I searched Rainwater looking for what I thought it might be because what is shown for Mt Vernon doesn't look like what is on the pieces. IP: Logged |

Sometimes we can identify a mark from seeing the pattern. Could you post a pic please? IP: Logged |

Sorry Dale, you guys are so silver knowledgeable that I didn't think you might not know the pattern. There are a few of them.

Henry Holland Curtis was the son-in-law of the Attleboro jewelry manufacturer Theron Ide Smith. In the 1880 census he was listed as a jewelry salesman, living with his in-laws. His son Theron Smith Curtis was issued several jewelry design patents in the 1920s. IP: Logged |

Ok, so does that mean that the info in Hagan's book is incorrect, or did Mt. Vernon acquire HH Curtis? Rainwater doesn't say who bought Curtis at auction in 1915, though Gorham acquired Mt Vernon in 1913.Now that I think about it maybe I should have consulted my SMP Book of Silver. So many books to look in. IP: Logged |
