I hope this message doesn't get me in trouble with Scott for cross-posting from the Silverplate section, but it is actually a different question and I'm hoping that some of the Gorham experts who hang out here can help. Long/short: I am trying to help a curator friend get a precise date on a silverplate Gorham cocktail shaker. You can see the marks on the attached photo. I've figured out that the single anchor, with the stylized EPNS underneath confirms that it is plate. Y538 corresponds with the shaker model. I don't know what the 24 stands for. There are no other date marks. The question for you (this is what makes it different, Scott!!!) is if you recognize this form of "Gorham" in an oblong and if it correlates with any specific dates. I haven't found another example of this. I have learned that Gorham did not use date marks for the years 1934 --1940. For various reasons, my curator pal is trying to be more precise than that. My initial guess was just that, the 1934 - 1940 period, as I typically see the date marks even on the plated pieces, or perhaps it's a newer piece? (1950 and after) Those are educated guesses of mine, I'm not certain though. [This message has been edited by asheland (edited 03-25-2016).] IP: Logged |

Many thanks for this. Your eye is good! The 1934-1940 date coincides with what we know of the history of the piece. That might be the best we can do, unless someone knows something more about this form of the "Gorham" mark. IP: Logged |
