My favorite cream ladle is an unmarked ladle by Whiting in a lotus pattern, with a flower-shaped bowl. (I've shown it before in a thread about my cream ladles.) Whiting made salt cellars with this same bowl shape in two sizes. The smaller size is exactly like the bowl of my ladle (I've seen them for sale online, but I don't own an example). Here's an example of the larger size, which has fewer petals than my ladle. IP: Logged |

Here are the marks. The Whiting mark is a bit hard to read, but it's definitely the mark, with the little lion and W. It's under the 58 STERLING and the stem (the other black spots are remaining bits of tarnish).

Thank you! The salt dishes must have been popular, because I saw an exact copy in silver plate. It looks as if it might have been cast from the smaller Whiting lotus salt. IP: Logged |

That are wonderful water lily and lotus examples. Whiting had great designers and silversmiths. IP: Logged |

Nice pieces. Here's Whiting's covered butter dish in the same style: IP: Logged |

The creative use by Whiting of the leaf, petal and tendril components is accented by comparison of the pieces. I didn't understand the butter dish design as well until I saw your ladle and bowl. Wonder if there are other similar items. IP: Logged |

Speaking of other similar items: I just found this napkin ring, one of a pair in the same style with the addition of a butterfly. IP: Logged |

These may have been inspired by John La Farge’s designs. I wonder how many of the Whiting’s designers stayed after they merged with Gorman. Wonderful pieces. I think I would want my napkin to stay in its holder and just use a different one for dinner. [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 06-20-2022).] IP: Logged |
