This is a Gorham bird’s nest pudding knife that I would call a server. My wife collects bird’s nests; usually with three eggs in them as we had three children. I think this was called a knife by Gorham as one could cut the pudding with the sharp edge and then scoop a serving out of the dish. IP: Logged |

June, I do think this is an attractive pattern. I think for a figural piece this was successful for Gorham as there seem to be quite a few on the market today in a number of different forms. IP: Logged |

This is a small unmarked silver plated birds nest basket. It is missing its handle and that may be where the maker's mark was. It has the three eggs in a rather roomy nest with two birds just flying in for tending to the eggs. I really do not know how old this is, but I think it is typical of the high quality silver plated items that were made in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The leaves surrounding the nest have pears on them so perhaps the nest was intended to be in a pear tree. [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 12-17-2021).] IP: Logged |

I gave a version of the basket to a friend a number of years ago. I wish I'd taken a photo first. The one I gave her had ferns instead of pears. It would have been nice to compare. She's moved house since then, and I don't want to embarrass her by asking for a photo in case it fell victim to downsizing. Anyway, lovely nests! IP: Logged |

Polly, Thanks for that interesting information. That was a nice gift and I hope your friend still has room to enjoy it. IP: Logged |

This is a great pattern! Pieces of bird's nest had the bird head up or down (or bird-less nest for small items like nut picks and demitasse spoons). It seems that the same server might be available with either bird configuration. The sugar sifter and master butter examples below are head down and the ice spoon is head up.

Great pieces from Gorham. I had not seen the squirrel before; I must admit I like squirrels on the end of a serving piece better than in real life. We have more than our fair share of squirrels as we have lots of nut trees around. In the fall of this year I was lucky enough to be in our back yard when a hawk swooped down an got a squirrel for his dinner. This was a very successful pattern for Gorham and thanks for showing the cute squirrel. IP: Logged |
