I am looking for some help in identifying a Sterling Silver Salver that my daughter in law has been given by her grandparents. It is stamped as follows;

A.B. Meriden Silversmith
Patent June 13, 1868
November 3rd 1868
10
It is engraved;

Fannie
fr.
Grace M.E. Church November 30, 1876

It is in an arctic hunting motif.

A. B. Meriden is interesting, because it doesn't seem to show up with Meriden Britannia and the other Meriden (CT) based silver plating firms. However, you have a very nicely documented American object, with what sounds like an unusual and therefore desirable engraved scene. The patent date may be the pattern, or perhaps the shape. The inscription date denotes the time the piece was bought and presented to Fannie, who clearly served her women's auxiliary or altar guild well. Given the date and the marks, I'd think that this is an electroplated piece. Why do you say it's sterling? The fine engraving is not a clue, since good electroplate often has very fine hand engraving in this period.

By the way, as a forum moderator, I plan to post all of my responses in the Silver Salons, and will not make private replies. Our goal is to broadcast queries and information and opinions.

Any ideas about A.B. Meriden?

Ulysses,

My daughter in law had a local jeweler look at the piece and he was the one who told her it was sterling, not plate. I am skeptical myself, although there are no wear marks or places where the plate is apparently thinning and based on its age I would have expected to see some signs if it was plate and not solid. I am still researching the name A.B. Meriden myself and have so far not had any luck. If I get any more information i will post it here.

Thanks

Kevin Michel
