What I think you have is a souvenir spoon, and its use was primarily to remind the owner where he or she had been; and to remind all of his/her friends the same thing. Egypt was a hot travel spot from the 1870s onward for well-to-do and/or intellectual Americans. Such spoons were made for them, and not for Egyptians. What are the markings on your spoon? The dating is trickier. The mummy business makes me think Hollywood (i.e. 1930s), but the mystique of mummies really began in the 19th century, and peaked with the unearthing of King Tut in 1922. Enameling on souvenir spoons flourished at the turn of the century, but it still was happening, I'm sure, right up to the Depression.

Any other ideas out there?

I just stumbled across an article on Egyptian souvenir spoons in a back issue of Silver magazine (Nov/Dec 1989). In it is a photo of a spoon that sounds a lot like yours. The author implies that such spoons were most likely a product of the 1890's, but offers no further proof. Such spoons were made by native craftsmen as well as French manufacturers, as France occupied Egypt at that time. Regardless, if your spoon is like the one illustrated it is certainly a top flight souvenir, a far cry from the plastic spoons sold today!
