Just for information's sake, here at The Newark Museum we use only "precipitated calcium carbonate" and distilled water on cotton swabs to clean silver. That translates roughly into chalk powder, but it is a very fine chalk that doesn't scratch, but does remove the sulphur oxides that tarnish the surface. It's not as hard as you'd think, but I don't know where anyone finds these materials at a consumer level. At home, mind you, I just use whatever commercial cleaner I like best. IP: Logged |

quote: i use what ever works best, depending on the need or problem. Supplies-Qtips, wooden tooth picks(those with a squared middle) are very handy for grooves, hard to reach spots, etc.,distilled water, calcium carbonate(try a brewer's supply store). the Curator of one of the most renown collections has tested all the commerical products, and felt that "Tarni-shield" had the longest lasting effect. Cloth diapers(if you can find them) are great for drying. i then put the item on a pyrex dish in a 140 degree oven for a few minutes to finish the job. Have fun IP: Logged |
