My friend found a Gorham Vesta Case recently with his metal detector. Could you tell me anything about it?? It's pounded copper with Silver birds etc on the front. It's in Excellent condition. The date & approximate Value would be appreciated. dbethune1 [This message has been edited by Scott Martin (edited 03-04-2024).] IP: Logged |

Well, curators aren't allowed to comment on values (by IRS regulation). That's why you never see curators as appraisers on the Road Show. Match Safes were popular throughout the 19th century--as soon as lucifer matches were invented. The kind I suspect you've found is in the Japanese style, favored by Gorham in the 1880s. There is probably a date mark on it near the maker's mark. Gorham used letters as date marks in this period (1877 is J, and you can count from there). It's value would entirely depend on the condition and the coolness of the design. IP: Logged |
