Ulysses, I just bought a copy of "The Glitter & the Gold," and I'd just like to compliment you on a job well done! On page 44, figure 40, you show some test strikes by Chas. Kunze. I have a shellac buckle which depicts a bust of a mystery man. The bust is signed "C. KUNZE Ft." Do you have any further information on Charles Kunze, such as dates of operation? Also, do you know who the man on my buckle is, or what the "Ft" after the name means? Here are some links to pictures of the buckle: [ Any help would be greatly appreciated. Paul. IP: Logged |

Ft would stand for the latin "fecit" or "made by" That is all I can contribute to the matter at hand, I'm afraid. wev IP: Logged |

Charles Kunze could be tracked in the Newark City Directories, here in our library. I only know of him because of the things we got by him. He certainly worked at the end of the 19th century--and this shellac buckle would be among the kinds of things he would have done--he was a die sinker and an engraver, so it follows. My guess is that the buckle, if it is, as you say, a mourning buckle, depicted the deceased. Such personal portraits certainly existed in cameos and in painted miniatures, so it might well be an anonymous person. Unless it's Garfield or someone famous who had died. IP: Logged |
