Over the weekend, June & I picked up this engineering floor plan of a plating room. Since it mentions a Newark company we thought you might find it interesting. We believe that Hanson & Van Winkle Co. were suppliers to the plating industry and not plate manufacturers. This plan is most likely from the early 1920's.

I'll have to do some research on what Hanson & Van Winkle did here. Sure looks like they produced plated objects--but of what nature I'm not sure. I'll get back to you. IP: Logged |

My trusty volunteer did some directory searching on Hanson & Van Winkle. The firm was founded in 1820, probably in New York. But, by the 1830s they had their factory in Newark, while maintaining offices in New York--typical of Newark's silver and jewelry industry. They were indeed manufacturers of equipment and chemicals for electro-platers, and probably would have supplied many of the manufacturers in Newark and in the northeast. THeir specialty was the "Little Wonder" Electric-Dynamo plating machine, a $100 piece of equipment. I wonder if any of their stuff survives in the old plating factories of New England? They probably made all the machinery for the Tiffany plating factory in Newark, which opened in the 1870s. They survived World War I, so the plan you found was probably from just when you thought.
