I am seeking help in obtaining information on a Sterling Silver tray given to me by my mother. It is oval in shape,(20x15 1/2), quite heavy, with a grape vine all along the edge. Upon inspection of the underside, I found that one side had a number 3725/cr and beneath is 111. On the other side, using a magnifying glass, there are three embeded stamps, each side by side. One an anchor, the second a standing lion, and the third appears to be a 3/4 circle and a letter/slash, letter i.e., J/_. Family history dates back to the French Quarter of New Orleans and Europe. We haven't any idea of the age or the origin, and any help would be appreciated. This tray has been well preserved and is in excellent condition. pesonal inquries may be sent to: IP: Logged |

If the marks are: 1.) Lion Passant, which is a lion on three legs with one paw raised then it is Gorham sterling, from America. Looking at Gorham's Old english G, I could see how it might look like a 3/4 circle with a j/ inside it. If the marks are in the specified order , and the third mark is the old english capital G, then it is definitely Gorham. Older Gorham holloware pieces usually have a date mark of some kind. Check all around the edge of the underside for additional marks. Please respond and let us know if the Gorham attribution checks out. IP: Logged |
