Okay, I am pretty sure the pieces I have are for commercial service and probably for a hotel but I would like to know a bit more about them. They are covered dishes, two are rather large while the other 8 are small maybe for side dishes, very heavy, the two large ones are in good shape but the small ones have had the silver taken off of the tops. The marks on the bottoms are as follows: (a flame/torch like the one used by the olympics today) Reed & Barton Silver Soldered 143OU2 (it may be of no signifigance but the first two numbers are out of alignment with the rest) 12 THE WILLARD 1929 I would appreciate any information on these. One is rather large, the next size about 2-3" smaller. IP: Logged |

Definitely Hotel silver, of which Reed & Barton did a great deal. Believe it or not, even Tiffany & Co. did hotel plate (the Hotel Dupont in Wilmington, DE was one place). The Willard is a great old hotel in Washington--at least the Willard I've heard of. The 1929 might be a date, and the other number is the model number. Fancy hotels did (and some still do) use a great deal of simple, usually neo-georgian style, silver for serving entrees, side dishes, coffee and tea, etc. The only institutional collecting interest in this might be a historical society. However, if you are inclined to use this at home, it's probably a great bargain these days... IP: Logged |

Believe it or not, there are some hotel silver collectors. Most of the interest in institutional silver comes from the railroad and ocean liner sectors, with military silver a bit further behind. Silver from famous trains or liners can fetch a pretty penny from memorabilia collectors. I once passed up, foolishly, a three-piece condiment set from the Queen Mary, that had been stolen by Rita Hayworth's maid! It had excellent provenance, from the former maid herself! I have seen a few of these sets for sale; I think they were popular "souvenirs". Brent IP: Logged |
