Hi--I have a lovely Victorian tea set made by Meriden Britannia marked #1866, and have just seen the IDENTICAL set on Ebay, also marked #1866 but made by Rogers, Smith and Co. What, if any, are the differences between the two? Are they equal in worth? Also, how can I establish the date of the set (based on the identification #)? Thanks, Liz IP: Logged |

Aha! According to Dorothy Rainwater's encyclopedia, Rogers, Smith & Co. not only made their own stuff, but they sold things made by Meriden Britannia, but plated by them (and hence marked with their name). So it appears you've got an interesting example of this sort of crossover. I wouldn't imagine that the value is affected by the mark--condition and style are the most crucial things. Date is best established by style, so we'd need to see a picture or have a really good description... IP: Logged |
