Hi, I was told I can clean a small silver or silver plated object (thimble) safely by putting it in buttermilk for an hour or so. Is that a wise thing to do (meaning: is it not harming the metal)? And should I wash it afterwards? Also, others recommended Simichrome for cleaning. Is that safe? Thank you for your help. Chanou IP: Logged |

I've never heard of the buttermilk thing before. I wonder what the theory is. I can't imagine it would do any harm that couldn't be polished off later. I would experiment with something small and see what happens. Obviously, this becomes unwieldy for a large piece like a teapot or a tureen (that's a lot of buttermilk), but I'm never one to poo-poo folk remedies! IP: Logged |
