I have inherited two candlesticks.....they are ornate.......fairly heavy.........4 inches across the round bottom. The height is seven inches. The bottom on one side has a lion in a circle that almost looks as though it were inserted there.( Lion is facing left with head down a little & tongue out. Back leg is straight out to the right.Tail is curled up over the back of the lion) On the other side they say..... made in England....... In the centre of each bottom is the number 2 with a line under it. Both have removable tops but the only markings inside the tops is......one has the number 0 with a line under it and the other appears to be 24 with a line under it....the 2 is a little chopped at the top line of the 2 so I'm not sure if it could be a mark instead. They appear to be identical & in very good condition although they need to be cleaned....any help would be greatly appreciated....thanks

In the absence of hallmarks, I'm guessing that these are plated candlesticks, and the "Made in England" phrase (as opposed to ENGLAND alone) suggest they were made after World War I, in the 1920s or later on. The mark may be a manufacturer's mark, but I don't know it.

Thanks for the reply you posted. I asked at our local Jewelry store & at the antique shop and they both said that the lion means that it is stirling.......I guess, other than having them tested, I will just have to keep looking.......I don't want to sell them as stirling if they are not....Thanks again

Aha, the lion DOES mean sterling--when it is part of a series of English hallmarks required by law in England. The lion without the other hallmarks usually is meant to "evoke" sterling--i.e. suggest quality. The mark you describe sounds like a trademark, not a hallmark. If the piece says "made in England" and does not have all of the various hallmarks (four after the death of Victoria, I think: lion sterling mark, city mark, date letter, and maker's mark) then it is not sterling. In the USA, things had to say STERLING or 925/1000, in England they had to have hallmarks. Are there other marks aside from this lion and the MADE IN ENGLAND?

Thanks again........no...there are no other marks that I can find other than what I said in the first posting....because the candlesticks come from a prominent family, I was hoping that they had been passed down, but likely not the case....is there somewhere to check out the patterns on the candlesticks and would that be helpful. I washed them with a mild soap and they look beautiful....very nice, sterling or not...can you give me any idea of value if not sterling..I know they are at least 50yrs. old because I have pictures of them at that time.......much appreciatation for your help
